Two weeks ago UCONN decided to eliminate the Polish program as it currently exists. As a person committed to the encouragement of Polish culture, we hope you will be eager to do what you can to keep the study of Polish language and civilization alive in this area. The teaching of Polish at the university has been made possible through a long-standing (at least 30 years) partnership between the Kościuszko Foundation and the University of Connecticut. In partnership, these two organizations provided approximately $25,000 each year for instruction in Polish language and culture. The worldwide financial crisis has affected both organizations, but, until now, both have continued to provide substantial support. UCONN’s recent decision is to reduce the budget for instruction of Polish to $1200 per semester, simply not enough to keep a vibrant program alive.
Over the past few years the Polish program has reached broad audiences. The Polish language classes have sponsored events to which Polish artists from New Britain area, Saturday Polish school form Hartford, and others have been invited. A special topics course attracted students interested in Polish film, history, and literature. This year, through the Polish program, UCONN offered an anatomy course in Polish for the School of Pharmacy. In short, the program has been a vehicle for serving the Polish-American community, inspiring cultural pride in Polish-American students, and exposing non-Poles to Polish language and culture. If those of us who care about preserving and transmitting Polish culture don’t speak up, I’m afraid the program is on the road to elimination.
It would be of great help if you would write as soon as possible to Dr. Jeremy Teitelbaum (jeremy.teitelbaum@uconn.edu) and Dr. Jeffrey Ogbar (jeffrey.ogbar@uconn.edu), Deans of the College of Liberal Arts and Science (CLAS) of the university, to encourage them to keep and even enlarge the Polish program at UCONN.

dwóch tygodni temu UCONN podjął niespodziewaną decyzję o likwidacji programu
języka polskiego, jaki od lat istnieje na tym uniwersytecie. Nauczanie języka
polskiego na UCONN było możliwe dzięki wieloletniej (co najmniej 30 lat)
współpracy między Fundacją Kościuszkowską i Uniwersytetem Connecticut. Jako
partnerzy, obie te instytucje przeznaczały każdego roku po około 25.000 $ na
nauczanie języka i kultury polskiej. Światowy kryzys ekonomiczny dotknął obie

ciągu ostatnich kilku lat polski program na UCONN docierał do szerokiej
społeczności. Grupy uczące się języka polskiego oraz Klub Polski sponsorowały
imprezy, na które zaproszeni byli artyści polskiego pochodzenia z rejonu New
Britain, uczniowie i nauczyciele sobotniej szkoły polskiej w Hartford i in.
Tzw. zajęcia special topics przyciągały studentów zainteresowanych
polskim filmem, historią i literaturą. W tym roku w ramach polskiej sekcji po
raz pierwszy otwarte zostały kursy z anatomii i fizjologii człowieka po polsku
dla studentów farmacji. Krótko mówiąc, cały program inspirował
polsko-amerykańskich studentów do podtrzymywania i rozwijania swojej tożsamości
kulturowej, a nie-Polaków przyciągał do zainteresowania się polskim językiem i
polską kulturą. Obawiamy się, że jeśli ci z nas, którym zależy na zachowaniu i
rozszerzaniu polskości i wiedzy o Polsce nie zareagują, to sekcja polska na
UCONN jest na najlepszej drodze do całkowitej eliminacji i zaniku.
